Songs by Bill Naughton, Jr., and Lou Gerolami

Welcome to the Home Page for Songs by Naughton and Gerolami. This page is designed to feature songs for which the lyrics were written by Bill Naughton, Jr., and the music was composed by Lou Gerolami. Naughton and Gerolami have been writing together since they first met when both were in college. Together they have written dozens of songs, however, only the ones that they feel have the most potential are included on this page. Bill explains, "All songwriters have to go through a learning process, and with very few exceptions, their early songs are usually not very good. Even Lennon and McCartney wrote what they considered to be 'throwaway songs' for several years before they hit their stride in the early sixties. Only a few of their early songs ever made it to the recording studio. Likewise, there are some songs that we have written that are better forgotten. But the songs posted on this page are memorable, particularly the beautiful melodies composed by Lou Gerolami. We like these songs, we believe that they have potential, and we hope that they find their way to the right recording artist and producer."

I’ll Love You More

Lou Gerolami has the ability to write melodies that while being completely original, at the same time remind the listener of something else, like the feeling that you’ve heard that before, for some reason it sounds familiar. But it’s not, it's new. This song, while entirely original, has always reminded me of a beautiful Beatles melody that they never wrote. They didn’t write it because Lou Gerolami did. But it’s as good as anything I’ve ever heard. And I am very proud to have provided lyrics for this melody which I consider to be classic, timeless, and irresistible. Out of all the songs that Lou and I have written, this might be my favorite. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I absolutely love this song! And it’s hard to make a comparison to Lennon and McCartney, but there are composers who have written melodies that rise to that standard, and in my opinion, Lou Gerolami is one of those writers. And I hold this song up as proof of that.

I’ll Love You More
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music

I'm glad you decided to stay,
I feel better than I ever have before,
There’s a cloud around my heart that’s gone away,
Every day I want to love you more,
I’ll love you more...

I knew from the first time we met,
That I’d never want another to be mine,
It’s a feeling in my heart I won’t forget,
I was sure I’d want
For ever more...

-bridge-
We were meant to be together…
I will stay with you forever…..

-break-
-repeat bridge-

One day the whole world should agree,
No two lovers ever loved like this before,
After all these years you’re still the one for me,
Every day I want to love you more,
I’ll love you more...

I Think I Had The Wrong Idea
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)

When Lou and I finished writing this we thought we should leave it simple, and repeat the whole melody instrumentally and end it without any more lyrics. I hear a saxophone here, so naturally I'm thinking this one is for Kenny G. I don’t know who he might find to sing it, but my first choice would be Graham Nash. He's the best I've ever heard at singing gentle songs like this. Then the second half of the song would be Kenny G’s saxophone solo. Now there's a great idea, a Graham Nash-Kenny G duet! Can you imagine? This is a really beautiful Lou Gerolami melody, so simple and so perfect. And I think many people will relate to the lyrics, the situation, the feeling. But in the end, this song is built on the melody, that's why it would work so well with the second half being instrumental. It’s one of Lou’s best and one of my all time favorites. I would very much like to have Jeff Pevar produce Graham nash singing this. And if Kenny G is not available, Jeff's sometime saxophone player, Jimmy Biggins, could nail it. Or as I wrote to Jeff, maybe it's an And I Love Her type guitar solo for him to do on a Spanish guitar! This song lends itself to a variety of possibilities, all very interesting and exciting!

I Think I Had The Wrong Idea
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music

Here’s a simple song to say,
I’m not in love with you,
I think I had the wrong idea,
I thought that you’d be true...

I saw you in the bar last night,
And sat with you alone,
But when it came to closing time,
You found your own way home...

It’s just not right that when you left,
You didn’t say goodbye,
I turned and you had disappeared,
Right before my eyes...

I think I had the wrong idea,
But I'm glad at least I tried,
I think I had the wrong idea,
Da da da… da da… da da da da…

-repeat entire song instrumentally with Kenny G style sax solo -

My True Love (For Awhile I Thought You Were The One)
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr, music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright BiliolgaMusic

An absolutely beautiful Lou Gerolami melody. One of my favorites. I had some words for this that I never really cared much for, so I rewrote the lyrics in 2010, and only a few lines from the original survived the cut. I think it’s much better now. I hope no one ever hears the old version.

My True Love
(For Awhile I Thought You Were The One)
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music
I’m glad I had another chance to hold you,
I’m glad I finally told you how I feel inside,
I guess there’s nothing more that I can say or do,
You really caught me by surprise...

You said you need some time to be alone now,
You said you’d let me know if you’d be back again,
Now after all that we’ve been through I don’t know how,
To be without you until then...

-chorus-
I know sometimes that feelings fade,
But you built me up just to let me down,
I used to think we had it made,
Now I’m not so sure that I’ve ever found,
My true love.... for awhile I thought you were the one,
My true love.... for awhile I thought you were the one...

-break-
-repeat chorus-

The Night Has Just Begun
(words by Bill Naughton,Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music

Of all the songs featured on this site, this song is the one that's been around the longest. It's one of the first songs that Lou and I wrote together, and we recorded it live in Lou's basement on a reel to reel tape with a couple of portable cassette tape recorders that we used to simulate the applause and crowd noise at the end. This was written, arranged and produced by just the two of us, on one very special afternoon. I remember it was a cold winter day. Lou built the song around his driving piano beat, and I sang my words and played the kazoo part. I'm very proud of this recording. Lou's mother has always said that out of all the songs that we've done, this is her favorite. It's featured here because the enthusiasm is contagious and the excitement generated by this performance, for us, is impossible to match. It's amazing that this recording has been preserved, what you hear is at least a third, quite possibly a fourth generation dub from the master! It's been said that this is one of the greatest spontaneous live performances ever recorded (I said that once). The song is pure honky-tonk, and we believe it could be a crowd-pleaser anywhere, anytime, performed by anyone, for any audience. Listen...and just enjoy it. I predict you'll humming it for weeks.

The Night Has Just Begun
(words by Bill Naughton,Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright BiliolgaMusic

I know it must be getting close to closing time,
'Cuz the bartender just said "last call",
But I got nowhere I can go from here,
I don't feel like going no place at all...

I want to have another little drink with you,
'Cuz you're the one who makes me feel so good,
It's funny we should meet again, it must be fate,
I never really thought we ever would...

-bridge-
I hope someday you'll understand,
I don't want you to be confused,
You shouldn't feel you're being used...

I think you've always been the only girl for me,
It takes a while sometimes to find out who's who,
Let's drink up they're gonna close the bar room door,
And the night has just begun for me and you...woo hoo

-kazoo break-

I hope someday you'll understand,
I don't want you to be confused,
You shouldn't feel you're being used...

I think you've always been the only girl for me,
It takes a while sometimes to find out who's who,
Let's drink up they're gonna close the bar room door,
And the night has just begun for me and you...
Yes the night has just begun for me and you...
Oh the night has just begun for me and you....da da da....
Da da da da da da da....
Da da da da da da da da da da da...
Da da da da da da da...hey!...

The True Meaning Of Christmas
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music

This is a very special song for us, a beautiful Lou Gerolami melody, and the first Christmas song that we've written together. We hope that it will find its way into the studio sometime soon so that it can be recorded and prepared for release during the upcoming holiday season.

This song should be a bonanza for the first artist who records it, and we feel that it has the potential to be included on many holiday cds in the future. The great thing about Christmas songs is that they're given new life every year when radio stations add them to their play lists, in heavy rotation, between Thanksgiving and the end of December. And annual sales of holiday cds and digital downloads can generate steady income for everyone involved. Considering that, recording this Christmas song is almost a no-brainer. The only question is, who will be the first to record it?

There were at least three singers from the American Idol top twelve in 2011 who I believe could do a great job on this song: Pia Toscano, Lauren Alana and Jacob Lusk are all amazing singers whose tremendous vocal range could really bring this song to its powerful and emotional conclusion. Both Lou and I would be very proud to have any one of them record this very special song that means so much to us.

The True Meaning Of Christmas
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright Biliolga Music

Snow covers the ground,
And lights glow on the evergreen,
There’s joy all around,
Tonight it will be Christmas Eve...

Little children believe,
That reindeer fly with Santa’s sleigh,
And when they’re asleep,
He’ll leave presents they’ll find Christmas Day...

-refrain-

And the story from the Bible that we know so well,
Is the reason for this season of joy,
This is the true meaning of Christmas,
In a manger in Bethlehem Mary gave birth to a boy...

Glory to God,
Our Savior has been born,
Let us keep Jesus Christ in Christmas
And celebrate… the birth…of the Lord...

-strum through last verse with flute or horn solo-
-repeat refrain and last verse-

You’re My Best Friend, You’re
My Soul Mate And I’m Yours

(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright BiliolgaMusic

Another great Lou Gerolami melody that is so accessible because it's so easy to listen to, and it sounds so familiar, while being entirely original. And another song for which I rewrote the lyrics in 2010, keeping only a few lines from the original draft. And there still may be a few changes in store for this one. I’m still playing with a few of the  lines. It’s turning out to be a high school song. Young love. We’ve all been there. We can probably all relate to this on some level.

You’re My Best Friend, You’re
My Soul Mate, And I’m Yours
(words by Bill Naughton, Jr., music by Lou Gerolami)
copyright BiliolgaMusic

I think I’d like to go steady with you,
I think that we’re ready for that now,
I promise that I will be faithful and true,
I’ll try not to ever let you down,
We’ve been close now for a while,
I’m accustomed to your smile,
You’re my best friend, you’re my soul mate, and I’m yours...

Let’s take it slow without making big plans,
Just kind of like giving it a try,
If we move too fast we could lose what we have,
We’ll just take one small step at a time,
We’ve been close now for a while,
I’m accustomed to your smile,
You’re my best friend, you’re my soul mate, and I’m yours...

-break-

We’ve been close now for a while,
I’m accustomed to your smile,
You’re my best friend, you’re my soul mate, and I’m yours...
You’re my best friend, you’re my soul mate, and I’m yours…
Do do.....do do do do…..do do…..do…..do…..do….do……
